Why Is Citric Acid Passivation Used for Stainless Steel?

Written by Neil Brook | September 24, 2026
While nitric acid passivation is a traditional choice for stainless steel and complies with standards like ASTM A967, concerns over its toxicity and environmental impact have led to a growing interest in alternative passivation methods. Citric acid passivation has emerged as a strong contender, offering a safer and more eco-friendly approach.
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), though based in the United States, is an internationally recognised authority for technical standards related to metal finishing, electro-polishing, and other technologies.

ASTM A967 sets out a range of standards for the chemical passivation of stainless steel components, outlining the various chemical treatments required to remove contaminants and free iron from stainless steel surfaces. Not only does the standard provide guidelines for descaling, cleaning, and passivation, but it also specifies several tests to confirm the effectiveness of these treatments, such as water immersion, salt spray, and copper sulphate testing.

Benefits of Citric Acid For Cleaning Stainless Steel

  • Reduced Toxicity: Citric acid is a weak organic acid found naturally in citrus fruits. Unlike nitric acid, it is not a strong oxidiser and poses significantly fewer health risks to workers handling it. It produces less hazardous waste, minimising environmental impact.

  • Effective Passivation: Citric acid effectively removes free iron and other contaminants from the stainless steel surface, promoting the formation of a protective passive layer. This layer is crucial for preventing corrosion and ensuring the longevity of stainless steel components.

  • Improved Safety: Citric acid's lower toxicity reduces the risks associated with handling, storage, and disposal, making it a safer option for workers and the environment. This is particularly important in industries with stringent safety and environmental regulations.

  • Compliance: Citric acid passivation meets the industry standards with proper process control and validation testing, it is also a more environmentally friendly alternative.
