What Is The Passivation Process?

The ‘passive layer’ is a thin layer of oxides that form on the surface of stainless steel in reaction to atmospheric oxygen. This is what imparts the natural corrosion resistance and hygiene qualities to stainless steel, and it’s ‘passive’ because it is inert and doesn’t react with the surrounding atmosphere.

For example, iron has an active surface. Therefore, it is constantly oxidising and breaking down, whilst a passive layer does not react, it stays the same. However, when contaminants accumulate on equipment, these can damage the passive layer or prevent it from forming, leading to localised areas where corrosion can penetrate. A sign of this is small cracks or pits in a stainless steel surface.

The passivation process resolves this by removing the impediments to the passive layer emerging, such as free iron, typically using an acidic solution of nitric or citric acid. The process cleans and stabilises the metal, restoring its ability to resist corrosion. A strong and durable passive layer is essential for all sectors that require high levels of hygiene, stability, or resistance to extreme environments.

Passivation Process In Pharmaceutical Industry

Passivation is important in the pharmaceutical industry because of the precision and stability demanded by many of its processes, from manufacturing and quality control to storage and transport.
